Since 1980, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) has supported a provincial travelling exhibition program. The TREX program strives to ensure every Albertan is provided with an opportunity to enjoy fully developed exhibitions in schools, libraries, healthcare centres, and smaller rural institutions and galleries throughout the province. The TREX program assists in making both the AFA’s extensive art collection and the work of contemporary Alberta artists available to Albertans.

I have had the privilege of capturing moments with TREX SW’s featured artists to showcase the makers behind the work.

Urban Soul

The six featured artists - Rhys Douglas Farrell, Levin Ifko, Harvey Nichol, Sydonne Warren, Adrianne Williams, and Tyler Wong - are all part of the travelling exhibition 'Urban Soul.'

Urban Soul began its exhibition tour in September 2021 and will continue travelling through Alberta until August 2023 thanks to funding from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

The production of storytelling.

As a visual artist myself, I connect strongly with the narratives of fellow makers in Mohkinstsis. I’m compelled by Joel’s story as a queer artist within limiting environments and how one responds to that.

Texture and colour are inspire me most when creating compositions as a filmmaker. It was crucial with this project to capture the essence of the shared workshop of Joel and his father.

With this artist feature, we learn more about this maker and why he creates what he does while also getting a closer look at Joel’s tools and process.

Habituate, Acclimate

Liam Kavanagh-Bradette & Nahanni McKay

Habituate, Acclimate features the work of two emerging Alberta photographers, Nahanni McKay and Liam Kavanagh-Bradette. Both artists have created a series that explore emerging survival dependencies necessitated by the effects that humans have had upon the environment.
